SHALER AREA HIGH SCHOOL: 7

The boys varsity football team started fast, scoring on its second offensive play of the game en route to a 24-7 win to open section play against Shaler on Friday.

After a trick play that saw quarterback John Nonnenberg throw a backwards pass to Brendan Marston, who then threw a deep pass to Darian Nelson, Nick Odom rushed into the end zone from 18 yards out to put the Mustangs up early. Olivia Bigger made the extra point for the 7-0 lead.

Shaler responded with a touchdown of their own, but that would be the only drive they could muster up any points.

Odom's second rushing touchdown of the first quarter and Bigger's extra point gave Plum a 14-7 lead, one they would not relinquish. Bigger would drill a 28-yard field before the half ended for a 17-7 lead.

The defense stood tall, not allowing a point n the final three quarters of the game.

Nelson put the finishing touches on with a 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, followed by Bigger's extra point.

Offensively, Odom led the way with 120 rushing yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns. Nonnnenberg finished 10-20 passing for 120 yards and Nelson caught five balls for 87 yards and a rushing touchdown.

Trent Reese led the defense with 10 tackles. Darian Slaughter recorded a couple of sack and Taivon Rupert had an interception.

The win improves the Mustangs record 1-3 overall and 1-0 in the section.

Plum will be back at home next week when they host Pine-Richland in a section game at 7 p.m. It will be first responders night.
